VMWare – HA error when upgrading from ESX 4.1 to ESXi 5

After upgrading (Migrating) an ESX 4.1 host to ESXi 5 in a vSphere cluster, the host had a HA  error.  When reconfiguring the Host for HA got the following error:

Cannot complete the configuration of the vSphere HA agent on the host. Misconfiguration in the host network setup.

When expanding “Related Events” on the task there was the following message:

Host xxxx.domain in cluster XYZ in Data Centre XYZ currently has no avaialble networks for vSphere HA Communication.  The following networks are currently used by HA: Service Console.

This occurred because ESX has a service console port group for the service console IP address and a VMKernel port group for the VMotion IP address.  ESXi has the Management IP address and VMotion IP address on the same port group.  During the migration the “Service Console” port group was renamed to “Management Network”.

This was fixed by:

  • Right clicking the cluster > Edit Settings
  • Clicking vSphere HA
  • Clicking Advanced Options
  • Adding the following entry – Option: “das.allowNetwork1”, Value “Management Network”

Note I already had an Option configred for “das.allowNetwork0”, Value “Service Console”
